![]() ![]() Once you finally manage to slow down the rampaging beasts, each boss has a puzzle-like arena phase where you have to pay close attention to their actions, figure out their weakness, and exploit it in order to ultimately defeat them. These battles draw heavily from Shadow of the Colossus and Soulsborne encounters, but with an optimistic twist. They then take the form of massive and twisted creatures you’d find in nature, enough to allow you to do battle with them. Your goal in each area is to climb three towers and light their respective braziers, which weakens the corrupted gods. They’re represented by swirling storms of deep red hate and anger that crash across the land like rolling storm clouds, always searching for you, the intruder. However, each area is home to a roaming god, once benevolent but now corrupted by a terrible malice. ![]() Time it right, and you can string together a consistent series of talisman shots, maneuvering through each biome with an ethereal grace. Hitting a talisman fills your boost meter and causes your hunter to momentarily sprint and surf through the environment in a way similar to how Journey bestowed a satisfying momentum to your wanderer as you slid down steep dunes. Instead, the nameless hunter that you inhabit has the ability to fire a bottomless supply of arrows at floating talismans that liberally pepper the environment, stretching out in various directions that pique your curiosity. But much like in Sunset Overdrive, if you’re simply running on foot, you’re doing it wrong. The news arrived over on the developer’s official Twitter account, with the reasoning behind the delay being simple: “Its critical that we reach our high quality bar, and its going to take a bit more time. The Pathless proceeds at a slow, trodding pace if you just move on foot. The Pathless was originally intended to be an early Apple Arcade title – perhaps even available on or just after the service’s September 19th launch – but we now know not to expect Giant Squid’s latest until early 2020. It also boasts a soaring soundtrack from Journey, ABZÛ, and Erica composer Auston Wintory and it’s certainly no slouch in the visual department either, with some gorgeous environmental designs. So we’ll be on Apple Arcade, but not as a launch title. ![]() Its critical that we reach our high quality bar, and its going to take a bit more time. ![]() The Pathless update: Dev is going great, but we won’t hit our original 2019 date. That said, don’t expect full-on action all the time The Pathless looks to have a lot of slower, perhaps even stealthy, moments. The gameplay I’ve seen almost makes it look like a sort of on-rails runner: Not exactly comparable to Temple Run, more like the on-rails set pieces of Platinum’s Bayonetta and the recently released Astral Chain. The story revolves around the main character’s struggles to remove a curse from their once-idyllic land. You’ll explore an expansive, mysterious forest, soaking in the sights and uncovering secrets as you go. As we first reported back in April, the developer’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed ABZÛ is a mythical adventure which sees you simultaneously controlling an archer and an eagle. For me, Giant Squid’s The Pathless is one of the most intriguing titles set to arrive on Apple Arcade, the tech behemoth’s upcoming gaming subscription service. ![]()
